The MSND program follows standard tuition and fees for graduate students (Blacksburg campus) as outlined on the Bursar’s Office website.
Track One students will be enrolled as full-time students in the fall, spring, summer and a second year fall semester (4 semesters) in order to complete the program on-time according to the outlined curriculum.
After the completion of their undergraduate degree in HNFE: Nutrition and Dietetics major, Track two students will be enrolled as full-time graduate students for one semester each of summer, fall, and spring (3 semesters as graduate student status). Students in Track Two will pay undergraduate tuition rates in their first year until they graduate with their bachelors of science degree in May, at which point they officially become graduate students and will pay graduate student rates.
Cost of tuition for summer sessions prior to the program start to meet program prerequisites are not included in traditional program costs and are billed per credit hour. Students taking prerequisites at Virginia Tech in the summer prior to the program start will need to apply as non-degree seeking undergraduate students (estimated additional fee of $60). Summer prerequisite courses do not qualify for financial aid.

- Rent, utilities, food: $600-900 per month for communities outside of Blacksburg; $900 in Blacksburg or Roanoke

- Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics student membership x two years: $112
- Dietetics practice group membership x two years: $20-$50
- Lab coat: $25-40
- Mask fitting for Clinical rotation: $50-$115
- Car expenses (gas, insurance, parking, etc.): varies**
- Pre-placement immunizations and physical exam: varies
- Health insurance: varies
- Meals and local transportation costs during program-sponsored travel: $200-$300
- Background check, drug screen, immunization check***: $125
- Application for final degree conferral: $25
- Graduation regalia (if walking): $80
*All expenses are rough estimates for your planning purposes only. Expenses are expected to vary for a given year and based on the specific living situation for each student.
**A reliable form of transportation (car) and valid driver's license are necessary for traveling to classes and supervised experiential learning sites. A commuter bus runs regularly between the Virginia Tech Blacksburg campus and the Virginia Tech Carilion Riverside campus in Roanoke and may be appropriate transportation to some, but not all rotations. The bus is free to Virginia Tech faculty, staff, and students.
***Students must successfully complete a background check and drug screen; inability to successfully pass may result in inability to be placed in practice sites and ultimate dismissal from the program.

Financial aid: applicants are encouraged to pursue private loans and/or scholarships through Virginia Tech, the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, state and local dietetic associations, or other organizations. Federal financial aid is student aid is also available.
