Nutrition and Exercise Metabolism (NEM) Lab

The Nutrition and Exercise Metabolism (NEM) Lab investigates the impact of food consumption on energy metabolism, exercise performance, micronutrient status, and holistic health.

A person laying down in a bed with a scientific measuring instrument above them while a computer illuminates in darkness showing the results.

Research conducted by the NEM Lab focuses on how consumption of food and foodstuffs influences energy metabolism, exercise performance, micronutrient status and overall health. Recent research interests include:

  • intentional weight gain in athletic individuals
  • impact of low energy availability on athlete metabolism and health
  • importance of iodine and vitamin D status in exercise performance, disease prevention and general wellness
  • influence of micronutrient status and exercise on thyroid function

Laboratory Equipment

  • ParvoMedics TrueOne Metabolic Cart with dual pneumotach for performing resting energy expenditure and exercise testing
